River and maritime town
UNESCO highlights the urban landscape on the hills overlooking the Douro and a history related to maritime activity. The cathedral, the Stock Exchange and the Santa Clara church illustrate different styles.
The bridge and the opposite bank
The full name of the property includes the Luiz I Bridge and the Serra do Pilar Monastery. The observation of the landscape does not therefore stop at the streets of the bank of the historic centre.

Alternate ascent and riverside
Group the visits in height, then plan a descent and a break near the Douro. Adding several lifts with luggage or after a long walk can make the program unnecessarily tiring. Check for suitable transport.
